San Diego & Las Vegas Business Trip/Vacation
September '00. Click on thumbnail to see larger picture.
in september i returned to san diego for some last minute urgent business
meetings. luckily i was able to join kasey's 1st birthday party, and
take a few days off and hit the slots!! but first--i had a heavy agenda
for california restaurants.
and then...
what a great experience, to get in a car for the first time in 3 months and
drive 350 miles to vegas at night across the california desert (albeit without
a driver's license--shhhhh....).

ahh, the bright lights... |

first stay at mirage. in my mind, mirage is
really the grand dame of las vegas.
bellagio & venetian & paris are just
newcomer poseurs. |

allyn had great luck in vegas. we played
monopoly "advance to boardwalk" game
in every casino. |

at the new alladin hotel & casino... |

...with attached megamall,
desert passage |

of course my usual luck was with me.
here i am with $500. yes, 5 racks,
each holding 100 $1 dollar coins. i
wondered how i would carry these to the
cashier but the block attendant just handed
me 5 $100 bills. but we will forever blame
each other: allyn for suggesting i put in only
2 coins, and me for actually taking his
advice and then winning a $100 jackpot
that otherwise would have been $200. |

but i was winning plenty anyways. |

most sucky job: when the lion takes
a piss against the plexiglass wall, the
attendant has to come out and wipe
it up so as to not obscure the view.
at mgm's lion exhibit. |
 |

ah, the open road... |

although my first 24 hours driving
was a crash-course (almost literally)
in how to drive again... |

happy hour for my birthday at chevy's.
got to show off my tiny nokia phone and
gorge on guacamole (did i mention i
really missed guacamole?) |

having lived in singapore gives me a much greater appreciation of california
and makes me realize i haven't been taking advantage of it has to offer.
in california i have so much at my doorstep: world-class restaurants,
beach, world-class mountains, snow, camping, l.a., san fran, vegas, hawaii...with
an ambient temperature that lets us be out-of-doors nearly all year round.
in singapore i've been feeling very cooped up inside for the last few
months, trapped by the heat, nothing to do but shop.
i have met a lot of people who are dying to live in the u.s. but because
of numerous obstacles cannot. so i feel pretty lucky to get to go back
to san diego.
